Wire Producer and longtime Baltimore historian David Simon criticized conspirators spreading baseless theories that the tragic and fatal collapse of the city’s Francis Scott Key Bridge today may have been a terrorist attack.

Simon, a reporter for the Baltimore Sun before making Homicide: Life on the Street, expressed a particular anger for Marjorie Taylor Greene, calling the rumor-mongering congresswoman “a complete idiotic fraud of a human being.”

“Is this a deliberate attack or just an accident?” Simon asked Greene in a post on Or an accident?”

Earlier today, FBI Special Agent in Charge William Delbagno said there were no signs of terrorism. But that didn’t stop conspiracy theorists from flocking to social media — or Simon from taking them on.

In response to a post – which is limited to followers – Simon wrote, “There are already videos online and radio broadcasts suggesting a series of electrical failures and loss of steering onboard. You can certainly You can speculate wildly and no one can stop you, but doing so doesn’t make you any less of an idiot here.”

When another poster asked, “Isn’t it possible that this was a deliberate terrorist attack rather than a tragic accident?” Simon responded, “It’s possible you’re just a worthless rando on an Internet hellsite speculating wildly and without caring about what officials in Baltimore already know. To a poster calling Baltimore a “mismanaged, failed state,” Simon offered a well-worded correction: “The Port is a state-run entity and has nothing to do with the Baltimore municipal government, you complete idiot. Are.”

To former Florida Congressman Anthony Sabatini, who wrote “DEI did it” when referring to diversity, equity and inclusion – Simon took no prisoners. “Your mother did you, but after a hard life of servitude on a truck-stop lot, are we really going to let her loose, broken womb drop you headlong onto the Winnebago floor and unleash yet another empty, racist demagogue on our society? Can be held responsible for putting the burden of Rs. After that? we can not do.”

Earlier today, President Joe Biden, who has said he will visit Baltimore, said all indications are that the incident was a “terrible accident.”

The Dali cargo ship issued a mayday call moments before the accident, in which the crew told Baltimore’s Harbor Control that the ship had lost power and propulsion. May Day is credited with allowing authorities to stop traffic on the bridge before it collapsed. Eight people – all construction workers repairing potholes on the bridge – fell into the water, two of whom were eventually rescued.
