On Saturday, ATK Mohun Bagan defeated East Bengal 2-0 in the Indian Super League (ISL). Dimitri Petratos and Slavko Damjanovic scored to help ATKMB finish third in the Indian Super League points table, their eighth straight Kolkata derby win in all competitions.
ATKMB were on the attack from the word go as EBFC reeled under the prospect of immediate bombardment. In the fifth minute, Pritam Kotal struck the far post with a free kick from Dimitri Petratos.
During the 12th minute, the Mariners began putting pressure on Federico Gallego, but the referee waved play on because Jerry Lalrinzuala had brought him down. Lalchungnunga then illegally tackled Ashique Kuruniyan. The referee could no longer look away and blew his whistle. Petratos’ attempt, however, whizzed over the bar.
In the 17th minute, East Bengal had a golden opportunity to score when Mobashir Rahman sent VP Suhair a piercing through ball. However, he slipped at the crucial moment of taking a shot.
As the game progressed, challenges became more and more desperate.
Barely five minutes later, Suhair’s fizzed cross was inches over Cleiton Silva’s head as he slipped Naorem Singh in.
Asish Rai replied by practising from the right into the middle of the field and unleashing a ferocious shot that would have been easy for Kamaljit Singh to save on. In the 34th minute, the East Bengal keeper got behind the shot quite easily after a deflection off Sarthak Golui.
