How did you get the role in ‘Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya’?
I would say that the journey of my life has been from mother to mother. This film was made with me in just one day! I was shooting for another project in the United Kingdom (UK) and came to India only for two days. And in those two days, I auditioned, met people and got finalized to play Shahid Kapoor’s maternal uncle. This happened when I had very short hair because I went bald for ‘Bones’ (2023). They [the makers of ‘Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya’ (‘TBMAUJ’)] I wanted someone who seemed like a normal person, who wouldn’t think twice before saying anything. It was in my realm of comedy. The slap scene was an improvisation done by Anubha and me. The film starts with that scene.
How was it working with Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon?
Both Shahid and Kriti are stars in their own right. Apart from being popular, he is also a reliable actor and is doing some good work. No one on the set had any sense of stardom. They were open to giving and taking suggestions.
I did not expect to interact with Dharamji (veteran actor Dharmendra). I am now his farmer friend (smiling)! He promoted my farming. He invited all my farmers to his house, where we took vegetables. He was very impressed that a young man from the film industry was talking about farming. Whenever Dharamji and I met during the shooting of the film, we talked about everything apart from the film. We talked a lot about our country and its farmers.
Share your opinion on the subject of the film?
No matter how much Artificial Intelligence (AI) impacts our lives, we cannot replace human emotions. Secondly, if we use AI to our advantage, we will have a lot of time for ourselves and our well-being. Washing Machine and Dishwasher Sharing our household chores is one of such examples of time saving. It is time to realize that AI can be used as a positive step towards the well-being of humanity. But you can’t expect any emotion from it because it can’t feel anything. It is scary if it is misused. As we progress with science and AI, human consciousness must be kept at the forefront.
The latest deepfake technology is being used in politics. What is your opinion on this?
As long as it is used in a humorous manner, we should all be open to it in a democratic nation. Take it as sarcasm and sarcasm. We should avoid insulting each other because we have become very sensitive. But somewhere, I think, because we have been democratic, there was a huge place for humor and satire till the 1990s. After that we became very sensitive.
Did anyone ask you about ‘Sarabhai vs Sarabhai’ on the sets of ‘TBMAUJ’?
Dharamji had seen some of my work, Dimpleji (Dimple Kapadia) had not. Shahid and Kriti knew about this. When I reached the set on the first day, Kriti said, ‘I am sure you are playing the character of uncle.’
What do you think about your journey so far? Going back to one of my favorite subjects, where is the farmer and where is the actor?
I breathe the breath of a farmer. I breathe as an actor only when I get work. Things have changed for me in the last few months. In the first 24 years of my career, I did only two Hindi films. But in the last one year I have done four Hindi films. People have started accepting me in important character roles. I feel more established as an actor today. Because here if you have done comedy then they typecast you in the same role. Doing comedy is like learning classical singing. If you have learned classical singing then other genres of singing become easier.
It was on similar lines that comedy came my way due to extreme exposure. I was also satiated. The handwriting was also not that deep. But today, I am digging much deeper and finding out what treasures I should come up with as an actor.
