President confers Bharat Ratna on Charan Singh, Narasimha Rao, Karpuri Thakur and Swaminathan

Former Prime Ministers Chaudhary Charan Singh and PV Narasimha Rao, former Bihar Chief Minister Karpuri Thakur and agriculturist MS Swaminathan were posthumously awarded the country’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, by President Draupadi Murmu on Saturday.

The awards were received by his immediate family members at a glittering investiture ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan in the presence of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President JP Nadda and other dignitaries.

The government has also announced Bharat Ratna to veteran BJP leader and former Deputy Prime Minister LK Advani. It is learned that the President is likely to visit Advani’s residence to confer the award as he is physically disabled due to his age.

Former PM Chaudhary Charan Singh’s grandson Jayant Singh was overwhelmed to receive the Bharat Ratna. “I have no words to express how happy I am. Sitting there one slowly realizes the importance of the moment. The message that the Government of India has taken this decision (of Bharat Ratna to Chaudhary Charan Singh) has reached every farmer,” said Singh, who is also the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) party chief. Last month, the RLD joined the NDA to contest the Lok Sabha elections in alliance with the BJP in western Uttar Pradesh.

A senior Jat leader, Chaudhary Charan Singh, was PM for a brief period between July 28, 1979 and January 14, 1980. He served twice as Chief Minister of UP for the second time in February 1970, but his government fell after President’s Rule was imposed in the state. On October 2, 1970. They are accredited to undertake land reforms in the state. He started his political career with Congress and later formed his own party.

He died in 1987 at the age of 85.

On his late father PV Narasimha Rao receiving the Bharat Ratna, Prabhakar Rao thanked Narendra Modi for bestowing the honor on the former prime minister. “Being selected for the Bharat Ratna (posthumously) is not only for the family but also for the admirers and followers of Narasimha Rao. We sincerely thank PM Narendra Modi for taking the initiative to confer the nation’s highest award on PV Narasimha Rao,” he said.

Modi took to social media to praise Rao’s contribution to the “progress and modernization of the country”. “Every Indian P.V. Narasimha Rao appreciates what Garu has done for our nation and is proud to be awarded the Bharat Ratna. He worked extensively to further the progress and modernization of our country. He is also known as a respected scholar and thinker. His contribution will always be appreciated,” he wrote on X.

Rao was the first Prime Minister from the South and outside the Gandhi family of the Congress, serving from 1991 to 1996 at Raisina Hills. Often referred to as the Chanakya of Indian politics, he initiated economic liberalisation. He was born on June 28, 1921 in Karimnagar district, now in Telangana and died at the age of 83.

Similarly, Ram Nath Thakur, who received the Bharat Ratna for his late father Karpuri Thakur, said, “I am very happy. The Government of India recognized his work and gave him this award. On behalf of the country, I thank PM Modi for conferring the highest civilian honour.”

Thakur was one of the great OBC leaders of Bihar who fought against social discrimination. He was the Chief Minister of Bihar from December 1970 to June 1971 and from December 1977 to April 1979. He was born on January 24, 1924 in the most backward Baland community.

Late Agricultural Scientist Dr. M.S. Swaminathan, Bharat Ratna his daughter Dr. Received by Nitya Rao. He is widely credited for, among other things, taking India from a drought-prone country in the 1960s to self-sufficiency in food grains in the 1970s.

PM Modi praised Swaminathan’s significant contribution to agriculture and said, “His efforts took India from struggle to self-sufficiency in food production. The Bharat Ratna given to him should inspire more people to do research in agriculture and food security.”
