Performance of foreign medical graduates (FMG) and their passing percentage In foreign medical graduate examination (FMGE) has always been a matter of concern. Subject experts blame many reasons for this including shortage answer key and delay it Admit card Rather than the lack of qualifications and clinical exposure offered in foreign medical universities. The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS), which conducts the FMGE, is cautious about releasing the answer keys as it may lead to misuse by coaching centres.
Dr. Meenu Bajpai, Vice President and Executive Director of NBEMS, confirmed that NBEMS plans to implement reforms to help students taking the FMGE. “Releasing the answer keys will prevent misuse of questions by the coaching centers as it will give them an opportunity to understand the exam pattern. Furthermore, we would like to maintain the confidentiality of the question bank. However, there are plans to bring more transparency into the system soon,” Dr Bajpai said in an interview

Education Times.

Dr. Kaushal, Media Coordinator, All FMG Association (AFA) is demanding to create a provision for releasing the answer keys of FMGE on NBEMS website to ensure accuracy in the improvement process.
Once candidates qualify for FMGE, they can apply for temporary registration with the Medical Council of India (MCI) or any State Medical Council using the certificate. AFA claimed that the Board delays the process of issuing FMGE competency certificates, resulting in delays in the internship process for qualified FMGs.
Dr. Bajpai says, “Issuance of FMG Certificate of Competency is a lengthy process that involves double background verification. NBEMS cannot provide certificates without carrying out necessary verifications to control fraudulent practices. Meanwhile, there is a window of operations for the distribution of FMGE pass certificates. Eligible candidates are expected to collect the certificate in person from the NBEMS office at Delhi. The Board cannot award certificates after the distribution window is closed.
FMGE is an important screening test for FMGs aspiring to practice medicine in India. The registration process starts much before the exam; Candidates are required to submit the requisite documents as proof of eligibility for the final examination of the First Aid course. AFA blames NBEMS for delaying the process of releasing FMGE admit cards before the exam, which the association claims creates a stressful situation for students.
On the other hand, NBEMS claims that the distribution of admit card is a lengthy process which takes time after the candidates have submitted their documents. The Board starts the verification process with the best possible precautions. “If the board finds any forgery or mismatch in the documents, it becomes the responsibility of the board to verify it and then take it forward. That’s why it takes time for admit cards to be released,” says Dr Bajpai, who underlines that the norms for those going abroad are stringent. “A level of qualification is essential for students going abroad for their undergraduate medical education as this is the only way the quality of students can improve,” says Dr Bajpai.
