Explaining the end of the New Empire

“Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” Full of surprises. But there’s a huge cameo that’s been withheld from marketing materials until now that really needs to be discussed.

But to do that, we have to talk about the ending of “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.” If you haven’t seen the movie – or if you don’t want to be completely spoiled when you do – turn back now.

think about it Your last spoiler warning,

still there? Okay, let’s get into it.

Are there any additional monsters in “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire”?

Yes there is.

Is it a classic monster?

Yes it is.

Who is it?

This is Mothra.

wow really?

Yes true. The last time we saw Mothra in the MonsterVerse was in 2019’s “Godzilla: King of the Monsters.” In that film, she came to Godzilla’s aid against the titular Titans he faced – including but not limited to Rodan and King Ghidorah/Monster Zero. Zhang Ziyi played Dr. Ilene Chen and Dr. Ling Chen, the MonsterVerse version of Shobijin, two younger priestesses associated with Mothra. She was scheduled to appear in “Godzilla vs. Kong”, but her scenes were deleted.

How does Mothra fit into the story?

In “Godzilla X Kong” there is a hidden tribe of Ivi in the Hollow Earth who worship Mothra. They need Zia (Callie Hottle) to awaken Mothra. She does. When Godzilla emerges, after being super-charged in the glacier, he fights Kong. But Kong needs Godzilla to help him fight a new villain, a fearsome giant ape named the Scar King. As they’re fighting and destroying a lot of Egypt, Mothra comes down, acting like Patrick Swayze in “Road House”. He is the coolest. And he defuses the situation by convincing Godzilla to help Kong deal with this new threat.

Is Mothra involved in the fight?

She does. The big climactic third phase battle in Hollow Earth begins, in which Kong, Godzilla, and Mothra face off against the Scar King and Shimo, a Titan (probably the first) that the Scar King controls with a magic crystal (because of course He does this). There is also Scar King’s army of apes, who join in the battle. When the battle finally comes to the surface, the Scar King, Godzilla, and Kong (with a new robotic glove) fight in Rio.

what happens next?

Of course, they defeat the Scar King. They break the magical crystal controlling Shimo and Shimo freezes the Scar King. Kong shatters his frozen body, just as the Terminator destroys the frozen T-1000. Peace returned to the world. Kong goes back to the Hollow Earth with Shimo, ruling as a benevolent ruler. Godzilla goes back to the Colosseum in Rome to take a nap. (Yes, seriously.) We worship our sleeping God.

Why doesn’t Mothra appear in any marketing?

This look of his is very surprising. Even when they set up the Mothra-worshipping Ivy tribe, there’s still no guarantee we’ll actually get to see her. And they’ve actually featured her in some of the marketing moments, like when Godzilla and Kong are roaring at each other near the pyramids – Mothra is a big part of this sequence. But they portrayed her like she was an extra Spider-Man in the “Spider-Man: No Way Home” trailer. Pretty clever, huh?

But understand this – at one time it was not considered Mothra.

wow really? It feels…weird.

In fact! Let “Godzilla X Kong” director Adam Wingard explain

First, a small setup: there was a different monster, called Phosphera. It had wings. It was a lovely design. An image of Phosphera leaked online.

“There was another character called Phosphera that we had in place of Mothra. But Mothra was always the way it was written around the character,” Wingard told TheWrap. “And there’s this false story online that this other character tested badly, and then we said, ‘Let’s get Mothra.’ The plan was always to have Mothra. But we weren’t sure if we would be able to get Mothra or not. And once we tested the movie, we had the earlier version of her, and by then things had cleared up and we were able to get Mothra. Were able to do.

Wingard continued: “It would have been really stupid not to do Mothra because if you looked at this other creature, it did and said everything just like Mothra, but it would have been another creature. It would be very disappointing if, ultimately, we were not able to reach him. I don’t like that some people think this wasn’t the plan at all. If you look at the first draft of the script, it always says Mothra.”

“Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire” is in theaters now.
