Although she was sad that she could not attend, Brooks admitted that they were “champagne problems” and that she could not complain too much as there were so many good things happening at the same time.

Brooks said with a laugh, “It’s great, you know? But I wish I could have my cake and eat it too.”

“I think it means a lot because there are a lot of people who are deserving and I want this for them,” Brooks said. “I’m very humble, but there are a lot of people I want this for – especially because purple colour Has left such a mark on American cinema that I think it deserves.”

In purple colour – Directed by Blitz Bazewule and adapted from the Broadway musical – Brooks stars Fantasia Barrino, Taraji P. Henson, Ciara, Colman Domingo, Halle Bailey, HER, Jon Batiste, Corey Hawkins and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor.

While the film earned multiple nominations at the BAFTAs, Critics’ Choice Awards, Palm Springs International Film Festival Film Awards, and others, it was one of several films notably snubbed at this year’s Oscars.

“We can’t predict what’s going to happen but it would be a huge win not only for me, but for everyone involved,” he said.

According to Brooks, her role in the film changed her perspective on things, and she is now “fighting like Sophia to the end.”

“There’s a fighter inside of me now. I want this and I’m not afraid to say it,” she said. “As actors, we’ve been taught, like, ‘Let’s be happy being in the room.’ Don’t get me wrong! I’m very happy with who I am. But the truth is, there’s a side of us all that wants to win. I’m not afraid to admit that.”

Now looking back on her long career, Brooks wondered what advice she would give to a young actor hoping to find success in Hollywood, and it all comes back to trying.

“Work. Stay focused on the job. Get applause, everything.” [other] The stuff… it will come. But the only way to get there is to work,” Brooks shared. “Also, maintain your authentic self while working. You can’t be anyone else. It’s the best version of yourself anyway, and no one can do a better job than you.”
