Last Friday, we learned that Mirror Group and Prince Harry have settled the remaining outstanding hacking claims and illegal news gathering claims. Harry won his limited case last December, but a ruling has yet to be made on over a hundred hacking claims (on Harry’s behalf alone). Harry publicly promised to see the case to the end and to continue testifying against the Mirror until the Mirror agreed to his terms. Mirror’s lawyers fought a minor battle for about a month, then surrendered. All we know is that Mirror will have to make an immediate payment of £400K as a mandatory down payment upon settlement.
Harry’s lawyer, David Sherbourne, was in court on Friday to file all the paperwork and inform the court that a settlement has been reached. In and out of court, Sherbourne delivered Harry’s statement, in which Harry not only called out the illegality of the Mirror’s editors and journalists, but also specifically named Piers Morgan. Harry said (via Sherborne), “We again call on the authorities to uphold the rule of law and prove that no one is above it. This also includes Mr Morgan, who as editor was well aware of what was going on, the judge said. Even his own employer realized that he could not call him as a witness of truth. “His contempt for the Court’s decision and his continued attacks since demonstrate why it is so important to obtain a clear and detailed decision.” After Harry name-checked him once again, Piers Morgan immediately wet himself and blurted out in a trembling rage:
“I think this invasion of the royal family’s privacy is completely reprehensible and I share Prince Harry’s views on this. I just want him to stop doing this. Pierce literally hacked and defamed the Windsors for years and now he’s become some moral agent when it comes to privacy?? I think that’s all she has – “Harry is invading her privacy!!” GTFO.
Too: tells the time limit Around the same time as the agreement, the NY Post published an article by Pierce in which he was whining about Harry’s quick trip to the UK last week. Pierce wrote that Prince William “He would rather shoot himself than be in the same room with someone he now views as a despicable traitor.” Well…it’s a vivid image.
