A 17-year-old student committed suicide by jumping from his college building in Visakhapatnam. Kishori was a student of Visakhapatnam’s Polytechnic College – name withheld to protect her identity – and her family, who live in Andhra Pradesh’s neighboring Anakapalle district, got a call from institute officials around 10pm on Thursday that she was gone. Congratulating her elder sister who is expecting a baby, the girl also had a message for her younger sister, “Focus on your future and study whatever you like. Don’t get distracted, don’t be influenced by others unlike me. Always be happy, and Live a good life.”

Then, specifically addressing her father, the teenager wrote that she was stepping in because she was sexually harassed in college. “You may ask why I am not complaining to the faculty, but that will not help. They (her tormentors) have taken photos of me and are threatening me. There are other girls too. We cannot tell anyone. And We can’t even avoid college. We get caught in between. If I file a police complaint or contact the authorities, they will post my photos on social media.”

“The reason I made this decision is because if I leave now, you’ll feel bad for a few years and then you’ll forget. But, if I’m around, you’ll always see me and feel bad.” She told her father before leaving a final message for her older sister: “Sorry sister, I’ve made you all stressed, but I have to go”.

The family immediately responded, telling her the police were on the way and urging her not to make any hasty decisions, but got no response. The body of the girl was found after some time.

The girl’s father said that a police complaint has been filed. “I need to know why my daughter died. I brought her up with a lot of love and care. She scored good marks in class 10 exams and we admitted her to this college knowing that she will get good education here.”

‘No men allowed’

The principal of the college said that men cannot enter the women’s hostel. “We monitor all students. Men cannot go to the girls’ hostel. There is a woman warden, so there is no possibility of sexual harassment,” he claimed.

A police official said that faculty members and other students are being interrogated and probed from all angles.
